The spread is job complexity, not disagreement — low end = clear, open access; high end = a hazardous tree over something valuable. Crane cost is from a single NJ source and is directional. Why a mature oak costs more
Height alone undersells a big oak. Wayne's Tree Service specifically flags mature oaks of 80 ft and up as premium removals — the weight, wood density and structural complexity all raise the labor and rigging. A crew can't just drop a tree that size near a house; they climb it and lower it in controlled sections, or bring in a crane. That's why an 80-ft oak over a driveway can cost several times what the same-height tree in an open field would.
The per-inch method, worked through for a big oak
For thick-trunked trees, NJ crews often price by trunk diameter (DBH) rather than height. Mid-State Trees publishes NJ rates of $12–$35 per inch of DBH for a standard tree, and $35–$65 per inch for a hazardous one. Using that sourced rate — not an independent quote we collected — here's what a large oak pencils out to:
- A 60-ft oak with roughly a 30-inch trunk, at the standard $12–$35/inch rate, works out to about $360–$1,050 in base cutting cost.
- If that same tree is dead or leaning — hazardous — the $35–$65/inch rate puts the base at about $1,050–$1,950.

When you need a crane
Once a tree is tall enough, heavy enough, or close enough to a structure that climbing and rigging gets dangerous, the crew brings in a crane to lift sections out cleanly. If a contractor quotes the high end of the XL band, ask whether a crane is included — it usually is, and it's usually the reason.
